Pure water or abrasive in waterjet cutting?

The choice depends on material, thickness, required cut edge, and productivity. Abrasive extends the cutting range to hard materials but brings additional demands for metering, wear, and residue management.

Pure waterjet

In pure-water cutting, only the accelerated water jet acts on the material. Whether the process is suitable must be assessed against the specific material and the required part quality.

Abrasive waterjet

For hard materials, a mineral abrasive is typically added to the water jet. The mixing chamber and focusing tube accelerate the cutting medium within the jet. This simultaneously raises the demands on abrasive feed, wear parts, the catch tank, and disposal or reprocessing of the spent material.

Deciding on the actual part to be cut

Material, thickness, contour, tolerance, cut edge, and quantity should be assessed together. For investment decisions, representative cutting trials are more reliable than a blanket assignment based on material group alone.
